With unorthodox math professor and stats genius Micky Rosa leading the way, they've cracked the code. By counting cards and employing an intricate system of signals, the team can beat the casinos big time. Seduced by the money, the Vegas lifestyle, and by his smart and sexy teammate, Jill Taylor, Ben begins to push the limits. Though counting cards isn't illegal, the stakes are high, and the challenge becomes not only keeping the numbers straight, but staying one step ahead of the casinos' menacing enforcer: Cole Williams.

    21 or bust?

21 is based on the Ben Mezrich book entitled "Bringing Down the House: The Inside Story of Six MIT Students Who Took Vegas for Millions". The best selling book is "based on a true story", but it should be noted that while it is listed as non-fiction, there are dramatizations in the book. The movie is no different in that it also departs from actual events. Fans of the book should also note that there are some differences between the book and the movie.

21 stars Jim Sturgess as a MIT student named Ben Campbell who is trying to get into Harvard Medical School. I think it is fair to say that his performance in 21 is mediocre. He was better in Across the Universe and The Other Boleyn Girl, two movies that he was also in recently.

Ben Campbell is a very intelligent student, and particular good at match and numbers. It's not long before one of his professors, played by Kevin Spacey, notices Ben's talents. He then recruits Ben to his team of players who count cards and go to Las Vegas every weekend to make big money. Reluctant at first, the money ends up too tempting as he needs it for medical school, and soon he is off to Las Vegas with the rest of the team.

While no where near any of his best performances, Kevin Spacey is fairly good in his role as Professor Michey Rosa. Also look for a decent performance by Lawrence Fishburne as a tough casino security consultant.

Ultimately, 21 isn't a bust. It's just not great either. Watch it with low expectations and you won't be disappointed. While it may have dramatized the actual events, the result is that I found myself entertained for the length of the movie.

21 is rated PG-13 for some violence, and sexual content including partial nudity. It runs for 123 minutes.

21 was such an exciting movie to just sit down and watch. The whole entire movie was very intense. Especially the last 10 minutes of this, it really keeps you on the edge of your seat. This movie had some great twists that you do not see coming at all. Especially one of the twists at the end that you will be shocked from. I loved the main actors role in this movie. I thought that Jim Sturgess did such an amazing job playing the main role. He had a whole lot of stuff going through his mind in this movie the whole time. I thought that if they tried they would not have of found a better actor to play his role. Kevin Spacey also handed in a great performance as well. Kate Bosworth was looking very hot, and also did a great job. I loved how this movie was really based on a true story. I always find movies that are based on true stories good. This one was especially good though. It sort of teaches you a little bit about black jack as the movie goes on. This movie is well worth your money and time. It's good this movie was 2 hours long it made all the better. The thing this movie is trying to show you is that you get a second chance. It really shows the main actor in it that you don't know how good you have it until you loose it all. The people in this movie get way ahead of themselves and want to do to much. Overall this was a great movie. It was well worth my time and I would love to see it plenty of more times. So just give this movie a chance and go see it. You will most likely enjoy it. I think that any ages above 13 would enjoy this. You will especially like this movie if you like to gamble or play cards.

Interesting fact: the movie is based on a book whose characters, while based on actual people, are actually composites of several characters. Most of the characters involved in the true story were of males asian origin, but there was only one asian male in the cast.

plus eleven, plus four, minus six, still not the way i'd want to pay for my schooling for, hopefully after seeing this kids won't drop out of school to play blackjack for a living, there are already enough of them dropping out for poker.

The strange algorithm they use to calculate the cards is just impossible to understand, but the movie is not bad in general.

Casino for the teenaged crowd. 21 is simply put just a fun two hours but don't expect me to tell you that I remember anything from it.

This was a pretty good movie, but I must say that I hate films that are based on true events and completely change the story. None of the performances were memorable, but were decent. It almost seemed as if the filmmakers didn't know if they wanted it to be an up to date film or a time piece film. They used a newer casino (Planet Hollywood) and used the old school backroom justice used on cheats (back in the '70s and '80s) and facial recognition that was in development in the late '90s. I wish they would have used a decade and stuck with it.

Kevin Spacey does here what he does so well, he fits into the slimy skin of a crook you love to hate. Young up & coming actor Jim Sturgess is the boy genius who goes from the crooks prodigy to his enemy in this smooth story here!

For a movie which emphasizes the themes of variable change and non-linear equations, this had a very linear plot. It was entertaining, but predictable, and as much as I love to watch Jim Sturgess, I don't think I'll be watching this again any time soon.

It's a movie that doesn't know what its trying to be, it can be sophisticated and slick and then seem like another teen flick. The plain dialogue doesn't help either. The concept is interesting and the pace is comfortable, but overall it doesn't live up to what it could have been.

Pretty good. It lacked a little on the story. For example I never felt like I learned the basics of counting cards. But overall entertaining and fun. Some really good directing and cinematography.

I loved this movie. It was scary and sad during some parts, but had such a great twist! While you watch it your eyes are glued to the screen trying to figure out how to count cards. It makes you want to go out and learn after the movie is over!

Fantastically entertaining movie. Chronicle of excess in the name of intellectuality. I was not entirely satisfied with the ending, but this one definitely warrants repeat viewing.

    In response to Virgincrow:
If you have ever read the book this movie is nothing like it so saying that this movie is based on true events is only because it is loosely based on a book that is an accurate representation of an extra-ordinary tale that is the book "Bringing Down The House".

to those who have used the word "predictable" to describe this movie: this is based on a true story not the figment of someone's imagination...so, they tend to stick to facts.

Huh. Looks cool. But seriously, why did they even bother changing the characters from Asian to Caucasian? Do they really think the movie would tank just 'cause the cast is Asian? ... Or did they just want to work Kevin Spacey into it?

Crap. Now I'm torn. I hate racial prejudice... but I love Kevin Spacey.
