Plot: The story of a young ex-con Jack, newly released from serving a prison sentence for a murder he committed as a child.
"Boy A" is based on a novel by Jonathan Trigell, possibly inspired by the real-life British case of two youths seen on a shopping mall's security video as they led away a child who was found dead. Such cases raise the question: Are children who murder indeed essentially evil, or can they heal and change over a period of years? Should society give them a second chance?
The film, directed by John Crowley and written by Mark O'Rowe, paints an accurate portrait of working-class life in the north of England, the grimness of the streets contrasting with the beauty of the countryside. It is spoken with accents, Mullen's Scottish the hardest to understand. He can speak standard English, but the accent is one of his tools. I've never had a problem with his speech, because he is such a great actor you can forget the words and listen to the music.
This a good script and well done film, on screens now and soon on DVD.

I saw this on the tellybox a year ago. A good story from the perspective of a teenage muderer once release after doing his time and a change of identity. It shows waht could happen if the tabloids ever catch up with James Bulger's killers .
MIFF '08: The casting of Jack was spot on - I liked him from the very first scene and thought it was good that they left it ambiguous as to the level of his involvement in the murder. Thank God they didn't have him flip out and return to jail or anything (it looked like it was going that way, and frankly, I've seen that done before). Luckily, they took things in another direction and the ending was nothing short of tragic. Great film - I really want to read the book it was based on now.
An intellectually stimulating and dynamic film about a man struggling for redemption after spending many years in the UK juvenile prison system. the movie takes the viewer through periods of darkness and hope, and transitions smoothly between the past and present. ultimately showing that sometimes there are not only several sides to every story, but also many possible outcomes.
Superbly acted British drama originally screened on Channel 4, forcing some hard questions out into the open. Second chances - OK until an inconvenient truth blurs good and evil?
Just watched the trailer.. if I've don't got anything better to watch.. I will probably watch this one.. =P
Very slow starting out, but ultimately a really interesting and heart-breaking story. Jack committed a horrible murder when he was young, possibly 12 or 13. Having served his sentence, he is now in his early 20s and living under an assumed name, trying to start life over. While not much happens in the movie, getting to know Jack in his new life and learning about his haunting past through flashbacks make this a fascinating character study. Andrew Garfield delivers a breakthrough performance.
This film left me utterly speechless. This great British Drama is shot as a devil's advoate kind of view, showing two sides to every story.
Certain parts of the film led me and (I'm sure others) to recall a very similar well known British case.
The actions to the film lead you to make your own opinions and your mind is questioning every part of this dilemma.
Superbly acted, gritty, emotional, real hard hitting stuff with a controversial issue. Amazing! Kudos to the Director and leading actor for this one.
