Often compared to Little Miss Sunshine. Can't say I agree. It's witty, surely, but it doesn't match up.

Ellen Page and Michael Cera are both wonderful actors, with charm that comes across as sincere. But even with their talent, the dialogue seems forced. Diablo Cody has something going, but she's not there yet. Some of the lines just don't seem to hit the right note. The 'teenie' speech is a bit too thickly laid on ('Honest to blog'??). Perhaps it's an American way of conversation, and I'm just not well - travelled enough.

The story also ignores some important facts of teenage pregnancy. For example, emotional attachment to the child. Or the attitude of the parents, who, though seemingly caring people, take Juno's adoption suggestion up in a flash, without proper discussion. So, while not realistic, it's a refreshingly quirky take on a usually frowned - upon subject.

The soundtrack is super - annoying, but fun at the same time. The film is deep, and even the minor characters have layers. It's nice to see a movie that doesn't make young people look completely common.

*I just noticed that they didn't use the word 'abortion' even once, even though the situation at hand would have called for it. Something wrong with it? Scared it would offend someone? I couldn't help but feel this was a bit too pro - life for my taste. In fact it was so biased, it just lost a star on re - watching*

    #5: Juno
Miles ahead of your average quirky indie comedy, Juno has a diamond edge and dialogue that goes off in the brain like a firework. Ellen Page, in a starmaking performance, is the titular Juno, a very modern girl with a very modern problem: unwanted pregnancy. A great supporting performance from Michael ?Superbad? Cera and a toe-tapping soundtrack make this one the year?s tastiest treats.

Best bit: Juno tells her parents about her condition. ?If it?s any consolation, I have heartburn radiating from my kneecaps?.

Juno is a sixteen year old high school girl who sleeps with her geeky boyfriend and winds up pregnant, so she decides to put her unborn child up for adoption. I'm sure there are plenty of film-makers out there who think making indie movies is easy; just a case of the emperor's new clothes. If you make it LOOK like it's being clever, people will just assume that it is. But the fact is, the indie film is one of the great bullshit detectors of the cinematic medium. There are no special effects, no car chases or action to hide behind. If the script is no good, the film will suck. Full stop. Juno has a script full of characters that feel like real people having real conversations, and even the most unsympathetic ones are shown to have qualities that you can understand or relate to. It's warm and gentle and has a nicely non-judgmental approach to the subject of teen pregnancy. It's never exactly hilarious, but it is always pleasantly amusing and the cast are all very good. The opening scenes are little self-conscious and pretentious but stick with it and there's a nice little film to enjoy here.

"A comedy about growing up... and the bumps along the way."

Juno (Ellen Page) may seem wise beyond her years, but after sleeping with classmate Bleeker (Michael Cera), the pregnant teen quickly realizes how little she really knows about life. Thankfully, Juno has been blessed with parents (J.K. Simmons and Allison Janney) who trust their daughter's judgment, and a best friend named Leah (Olivia Thirlby), who's always willing to help out in a pinch. With a little help from Leah, Juno soon comes into contact with Mark (Jason Bateman) and Vanessa (Jennifer Garner) -- an affluent suburban couple who have been unable to conceive a child of their own. Mark and Vanessa seem like they would make great parents, and are eager to adopt Juno's unborn child. Now, as adolescent Juno is faced with a series of very adult decisions, she will draw on the support of her family and friends in order to discover who she truly is, and discover that one bad choice can have a lifetime of consequences.

    Review
There are comedies, there are the comedies with heart, and then there is Juno which could be referred to as either, but really deserves a class of its own. The quick dialogue never comes out of context, and the way the cast manipulates Diablo Cody's great script is as refreshing as a dose of orange tic-tacs. This movies has all kinds of laughs; those that are all out riots as well as those that seem a bit more like an inside joke between you and the screen which make you chuckle to yourself. But despite all the jokes, this film still manages to deal delicately with the theme of teenage pregnancy. Juno may not know what kind of girl she is, but from the beginning she knows what she's not. In the end it a story of one girl's trust in the world, and ultimately honesty with one's self. I really recommend you to watch this because you are missing out a lot not watching this.

Jason Reitman's film invites the audience to have one of two reactions in strict polar opposition to one another. Sure, you could resist its almost cloyingly independent/pseudo-edgy vibe from the first frame through the end credits, which ranges from a too-clever by half adolescent narration (by stripper turned screenwriter Diablo Cody), to the hand-drawn rhotoscoping title sequence, to the cutesy, catchy and childish songs of Kimya Dawson. You can steel yourself against the heart-warming story of an unplanned pregnancy and the softening of the sardonically witted 16 year old heroine (Ellen Page from "Hard Candy") at the film's center. You could even argue that the film is flatly directed, with no style or color to its mise-en-scene. But that would make you a cold and bitter person. Ultimately, mine is the latter reaction - one of complete and utter adoration. This is my favorite film of 2007 and everything I mentioned above, which should be an irritatingly self-conscious, collective shot in the foot, is in actuality a ginormous credit to why this film has been given so many kudos from so many critics and audiences. From first-time writer Cody's brilliant screenplay, to the more than game cast: Page, former "Arrested Development" alums Michael Cera and Jason Bateman, "Alias"' Jennifer Garner, "The West Wing"'s Allison Janney and "Spider-Man"'s own J.K. Simmons, Reitman's follow-up to his inspired anti-tobacco satire "Thank You For Smoking" (2005) is, in reality, a complete and utter gem.

NOTE: Nominated for 4 Oscars, including Best Picture and Actress, it (deservedly) won for Best Original Screenplay!

I don't like the message this film sends to teenage girls. Specifically, that teen pregnancy is without consequence. Indeed, the film seems to be conveying the message that you can get knocked up, then give the baby away without emotional trauma, and all the while, your parents won't get mad at you and your boyfriend will stick by you.

Pretty much brilliantly handled. Lesser writers and directors would've made the pregnancy ultra sappy. And made Juno and Mark a total pedo or seduction angle. Reitman and Cody made the story much more unique and handled it delicately.

what a film, sensitive at times and it is so laid back, Juno is one of those hidden gems. Juno is misunderstood and has her own unique view of the world and is a great performance from Ellen Page. The soundtrack is great and it works so well with the film and its an easy film to slip into and relax. I love the chemistry between the adoptive father and juno, the parents reaction is perfect, one of support and understanding, no yelling or shouting, they accept their daughter is pregnant and dont make out she is wrong but support her. a perfect film, i cant recommend it enough.
