It doesn't make sense, visually, but you still understand what the story is about.
Nostalgia plays a a big role for me here - this movie was one of my favourites when I was a teenager. Loved the soundtrack, the visuals - I think I'm still a sucker for the ability to take something like Shakespeare and put it in such a contemporary, artistic atmosphere.
Interesting twist on the classic tail. Not a big fan of Leo, but I thought the way they told the story was really interesting.
I luv this film
An update to the rating: I think this time through, it was the first time that I actually saw the whole thing front to back, and I'm glad I did.
I don't know what it is about Luhrmann's movies, but watching them, I find myself just breathless the whole way. In his usual style, this is a visually stunning, fast-paced, angsty and melodramatic (in a good way) take on the classic tale. It might be a little too teen-angsty, but really, that's as much Shakespeare's fault as it is Luhrmann's. The acting was very good - Harold Perrineau as Mercutio in a real tour de force - though Claire Danes bounced around between vacuous/hormonal teenage girl and a melodramatic heavyweight of a young woman, really going from one extreme to another. Bad call on the balcony soliloquy, but Luhrmann's likely more to blame than her.
And to Leonardo DiCarprio: I apologize. I never took you seriously, and Titanic sucked. But looking at the actor you've become, and looking back on some early performances, I think you were just too good too young for people to really see your talent. Great performance in a very good film.
The second movie I saw with Leonardo DiCaprio. It is a charming way of telling the story of Romeo & Juliet, and what I certainly liked about it was that they made it a story that really could happen in the '90, and still can happen by the way. The only thing I didn't like was that you really need to see this movie like five times before you understand about 90% of what they are saying. In this way it is a little bit hard to completely understand the characters, but watching it is all worth it.
to lkehisal and to whoever else decided that this movie was inappropriate:
I'm 14. I never thought that i would be able to get through a shakespearean movie, but this opened doors for me. i know shakespeare is amazing, but some of his work is very, sadly, inacsesable to a younger generation. this version makes that generation able to understand the magic of shakepeare. you are fully welcome to have your own opinion but dont make it so that others are turned off of a chance to discover the most amazing playwright this world has or will ever see.
This movie is BEYOND amazing. Claire Danes is brilliant and Leonardo Dicaprio is too! I just love it SO much. My favourite scene is the scene in the swimming pool, with the proposal and you know, declaration of undying LOVE that sort of thing. But anyway, this scene makes me ACHE! it makes me wish I was in love, makes me long for it......it was soo good!
Superb. A modern, enthralling, exciting, romantic, emotional, action-packed version that does justice to the orignal play.
Excellent soundtrack, perfect script as it's true to the original language and though modern, keeps aspects of the original play threaded into the settings, situations and props.
William Shakespeare is rolling in his grave. This has got to be the most awful versions of one of the best plays in history. It was ghetto, street, inappriate, ridiculous, and insulting. All involved in making this disgrace should be sent to court and sued for taking peoples' time and money unfairly.
oh men i really love to watch this scene "ur the one of most influencial man :;leon dicaprio, clair danes wonder ful girl "so pretty "that i want to hold and shake ur hand " i love thee julliet claire
